> From "When this monk was approaching the time of death" onward is the second \[section\], clarifying the attainment of fruits by the two types of persons. First it clarifies the good person's attainment of fruits, and next it clarifies the evil persons' attainment of fruits. The good person's attainment of fruits has two parts: \[first,\] it properly clarifies his attainment of fruits, and next it connects the past and the present. He attains eight kinds of fruits: First is the fruit of being able to uphold the Dharma upon hearing it. What is referred to here as "two hundred ten thousand kotis of verses" means śloka verses. From "He immediately attained the purity of the faculty of the eye as described above" onward is the second, the fruit of attaining purity of the faculties. From "Having attained these six faculties" onward is the third, clarifying the fruit of attaining an extended lifespan. This great being understood that dharmas have no arising or perishing; how could he have any concern for living or dying? It was only because he wished to propagate the sūtra for the sake of living beings that he manifested having a long life. From "At that time, the overbearingly arrogant" onward is the fourth, the fruit of the evil persons submitting with faith. "Great power of supernatural penetrations" means his physical manifestation of the power of supernatural penetrations; "power of eloquence in preaching with delight" means preaching the Dharma through verbal karma; and "power of great good tranquility" means his mental attainment of dhyāna. From "He further instructed and transformed" onward is the fifth, the fruit of causing good people to abide in the path. From "After his life ended" onward is the sixth, the fruit of relinquishing his body and encountering buddhas. From "Among the teachings of these buddhas" onward is the seventh, the fruit of attaining the perpetual purity of the six faculties and fearlessness. Now, we say that Sadāparibhūta attained eight fruits, which, according to spiritual stages, comprise three: First, attaining the purity of the faculties, which refers to the fruits of the three grades of worthies among inner worldlings. Second, attaining the perpetual purity of the faculties, which means attaining the stage of the first bhūmi and above, wherein he attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas, comprehending that all dharmas are originally quiescent and extinguished, and therefore his faculties were perpetually pure. Third, attaining the fruit of the Buddha stage: before attaining the purity of the faculties, he was in the stages of the ten faiths, but because he propagated the sūtra, this person fully completed the fifty-two stages of worthies and sages. From "Mahāsthāmaprāpta" onward is the eighth, clarifying the fruit of being destined to attain buddhahood. The eight fruits do not exceed the three kinds of retribution: the first four are retribution in the present life, the next one is retribution in the next birth, and the last three are retribution in subsequent lives.
