> Six kinds of persons were already identified in the "Apparition of the Stūpa Chapter"; now four kinds are explained: First, practitioners of the Hīnayāna who cling tenaciously to the past teaching; hearing the two expedients and two reals, it is offensive to their ears and contrary to their minds, so they do not give rise to rejoicing in accord. Second, those who cling to this sūtra as still being impermanent, with its cause and effect still not ultimate; if they hear the cause of the ekayāna discerning the existence of the Buddha-nature, and the effect of the ekayāna being eternally abiding and unperishing, it is also offensive to their ears and contrary to their minds so they do not believe and accept it; thus they do not give rise to rejoicing in accord. Third, those who cling to the veiled permanent, who, upon hearing this sūtra open the door of expedient means and show the real characteristics in an ultimate, complete, definitive exposition, also find it offensive to their ears and contrary to their minds and do not give rise to rejoicing in accord. Fourth, those with attainment who cling to the expedient and grasp the real; if they hear of neither expedient nor real, with nothing to rely on and nothing to attain, they consider it to be the view of annihilationism, and finding it also offensive to their ears and contrary to their minds, they do not give rise to rejoicing in accord. Therefore those who rejoice in accord are difficult to find, which is why their merit is so great.
