> From "Akṣayamati addressed the Buddha" onward is the second \[section\], explaining the universal gateway and clarifying Avalokiteśvara's virtues. Furthermore, although the previous text praised Avalokiteśvara as able to pull \[beings\] out of suffering and grant joy, it was not yet known by what means he rescues and pulls them out; thus it is now explained. Each and every difficulty is pulled away either by the bodily action of supernatural powers, or by the verbal action of preaching the Dharma, or by the mental action of secret rescue. Here too there is first a question and next an answer. The question also has three parts: first, designating the person able to question; from "addressed the Buddha, saying" onward, second, the actual question; from "Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara" onward, third, clarifying the person asked about. There are also three distinctions: from "how does he travel through this" onward, he asks about bodily karma; next he asks about verbal karma; "power of expedient means" asks about mental karma. From "The Buddha told" onward is the second \[part\], the answer. In the answer there are also three parts: first, directly answering the question by explaining the virtues of the three wheels; second, encouraging offerings; third, summarily concluding with praise. The first directly responds to the three questions and therefore clarifies the virtues of the three wheels; since he has supreme virtues he is a field of merit, and thus one must make offerings to him; clarifying the virtues of the three wheels means he is the donor. Next, explaining the offerings makes evident the field of merit; once the field of merit and the donor have been demonstrated, he summarily concludes with praise. The first text also has two parts: first, specifically clarifying the thirty-three bodies and nineteen preachings of the Dharma; second, summarily concluding all bodily teachings and expedient means. The first text also has three parts: first, manifesting the upāya of sages; second, displaying the upāya of ordinary beings; third, displaying the upāya of neither ordinary beings nor sages. The first portal clarifies the sages of the three vehicles, which is divided into three: in each and every one the three questions are answered: the words "should be with" answer the question on mental karma, "immediately manifests a Buddha's body" answers the question on bodily karma, and "and preaches the Dharma for them" answers the question on verbal karma. Above, from the manifest to the hidden, it stated body, speech, and mind; here, from the fundamental to the derivative, it gives mind, body, and speech. First, mental karma knows the capacities; next, he manifests a body; finally, he preaches the Dharma.
