- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [2.416](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1721.2.416)

> From "When the Buddha had not yet left household life" onward is, secondly, versifying the events after the Lotus \[Sūtra\]. The prose has two \[parts\]: first, clarifying the Lotus \[Sūtra\] events; second, clarifying the nirvāṇa. Here it again versifies these two. The prose introduction has six \[parts\], but here only five are versified: the first full verse versifies the assembly-gathering introduction; the next full verse versifies the sūtra-preaching introduction; the next full verse versifies the entering-samādhi introduction; from "The heavens rained māndārava flowers" onward versifies the manifesting-auspicious-signs introduction. The prose constitutes four \[items\]: 1. raining flowers and quaking the earth; 2. the assembly witnessing the auspicious signs; 3. manifesting the auspicious sign of light; 4. witnessing the auspicious sign of light. These are indeed two stimulations and two responses matching one another. Now the verses alter their approach in versifying them: the three auspicious signs are all matters of the one who transforms, so they are made one category; the two witnessings of the signs are matters of those who are transformed, again made one category; hence they are categorized according to the active and the passive. One full verse versifies the sign of raining flowers, half a verse versifies the sign of quaking the earth, and one and a half verses versify the sign of emitting light. "All the devas, dragons, ghosts, and spirits make offerings to the Honoured One among humans": whereas the prose directly clarified the raining of flowers, this now explains the cause of the raining of flowers, meaning that the devas make offerings to the Buddha.
