- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.298](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1721.3.298)

> From 'The buddhas of the past' onwards is the second section, expounding the gate of citing verification. With respect to the text, there are two parts: first, citing individually the buddhas of the three periods of time as verification; next, citing generally the buddhas of the three periods of time as verification. Each single gate is equipped with three clauses: first, the master of transformation; second, the teaching gate; third, the recipients of the teaching. These three are the good physician, the sublime medicine, and the sick person. Furthermore, the master of transformation is the Buddha jewel, the teaching gate is the Dharma jewel, and the recipients of the teaching are the Saṅgha jewel. Within the teaching, there are two clauses: first, generally setting forth all teachings. The Fahua lun states: 'Causes and conditions refer to the Dharma of the three vehicles; the Dharma of the three vehicles has only names and has no real meaning. Parables are like extracting milk from a cow, where milk is a parable for the Hīnayāna; extracting ghee from milk, where ghee is a parable for the Mahāyāna.' Regarding 'These dharmas are all for the sake of the one Buddha vehicle,' the second clause explains the principle represented by the teaching. The recipients of the teaching also have two clauses: initially they hear teachings such as the five vehicles, and ultimately they attain the knowledge of all modes. Regarding 'Śāriputra! These buddhas only teach and transform bodhisattvas': above, the intent behind the teachings of the buddhas of the three periods of time was explained individually; now the intent behind the teachings of the buddhas of the three periods of time is explained generally. The reason this text occurs is that above, in Śākyamuni's gate of opening the essential tenet, it was explained that it is solely to teach the one person and solely to reveal the one principle; but the teaching gates of the buddhas of the three periods of time had not yet stated this, so it is explained now.
