> From 'Śāriputra! The buddhas appear in the world' onwards is the second section, explaining the gate of the three vehicles as upāya. The reason this text occurs has two meanings: proximate and distant. As for the distant meaning: since the three gates above have already explained that the one vehicle is real, it is appropriate to distinguish the former three as upāya; this is to explain the intent of the two teachings, provisional and real, from beginning to end, past and present. Next, to explain the proximate sequence of emergence: from the previous using the one to refute the two and borrowing the two to refute the three, the assembly at that time doubted, saying: 'The principle is solely one; there are not even two, how much less three! The Tathāgata is one who embodies the principle; upon first appearing in the world he should have proclaimed that there is solely the one principle and no three vehicles. For what cause and condition was it that, when the principle had one, he did not preach the one, and when there were no three vehicles, he preached the three? Is this not speaking of existence where there is nonexistence, and speaking of nonexistence where there is existence, deceiving us?' Therefore it is explained: 'Although the principle has one and lacks three, solely because you five-turbidities people are deeply obstructed and incapable of receiving the one, the buddhas expediently preach the three. The fault lies with sentient beings; the blame is not with the buddhas.' This causes the people of the two vehicles to deeply regret and reproach themselves, and to take refuge in and look up to the Tathāgata.
