- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.62](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1721.4.62)

> In the text there are two parts: first, discerning the general retribution; second, explaining the specific retribution. The first half-line explains the retribution received in the next birth (upapatti-vedanīya); the second half-line explains the retribution received in subsequent births (aparaparyāya-vedanīya). Since it speaks of saṃsāric transmigration, the three retributions are continuous. From "Taking on the subtle form of an embryo" downward is the second part, specifically explaining the reception of retribution, referring to human retribution. The reason for specifically explaining human retribution is that the Buddha was born among humans and mostly converts humans. Human retribution is complete with the eight sufferings; the first half-line briefly explains the suffering of birth, taking the suffering of birth as the first of the eight sufferings; the second half-line summarizes the multitude of sufferings. "Constantly increasing life after life": in detailed analysis, the stages within the womb are different, which is "increasing life after life." Alternatively, a major lifespan is one life, and life after life is constantly like this; moving from the present life to be born into future lives is the meaning of "increasing."
