"His mind was as calm as the ocean": as a rule, when things are perilous, false, and deceitful, the mind must be flickering and unsettled; yet now it was stable, calm, and quiet, and thus he knew it was not Māra. 'Calm' means as stable as a mountain and as vast as the ocean. Since the mind was identical with the mountain and the ocean, he knew it was not Māra; hence the doubt was severed.
