> From "The people were all weary and exhausted" onwards, the verses summarize the second part: midway preaching the parable of the lesser \[vehicle\]. Above there were three parts: first, knowing their capacities; second, preaching the teaching; third, attaining benefit. Here they are summarized in full. In "knowing their capacities" above there were two parts: first, the lesser capacity manifests, summarized by one verse; next, illuminating their capacity, summarized by one verse. From "Immediately thinking of an expedient means" onwards, the verses summarize the second part: formally preaching the teaching. Above there were three parts: first, preaching the teaching; second, warning; third, exhorting. Here they are summarized in full. "Walled city": "city" separately allegorizes the two nirvāṇas; "outer wall" is the outer fortification of the city, which generally allegorizes the various merits of the adept's (aśaikṣa's) fruition level. "Adorned with various dwellings": dwellings and gardens are all within the outer wall, separately allegorizing the other various merits of the fruition stage; since the contaminated five aggregates are called the dwellings of birth and death, the uncontaminated five aggregates in which the sages dwell are dwellings. "Surrounded on all sides by gardens and groves": the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra takes dhāraṇī to be a garden, which the Hīnayāna also possesses according to its capacity. In the Āgamas, loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity are taken to be the four gardens, and the various uncontaminated practices are called groves. "Channels, streams, and bathing ponds": the nine successive concentrations flowing into one another are called channels and streams; the eight liberations are called bathing ponds. The Āgamas take the four dhyānas as four ponds: first, the pond with vitarka and vicāra; second, the pond without vitarka and without vicāra; third, the pond of purified mindfulness through protection; fourth, the pond of neither-pain-nor-pleasure. "Double gates and high pavilions": the three samādhis are called double gates; the knowledge of destruction (kṣayajñāna) and the knowledge of non-arising (anutpādajñāna) are called high pavilions. Furthermore, among the various dhyānas there are the "meritorious dhyāna" and the "purified dhyāna," which are both the culmination of dhyāna, called high pavilions. "All filled with men and women": concentration and wisdom are men and women; one can also take a mind of loving-kindness and compassion as women, and a good and sincere mind as men, which śrāvakas also possess according to their capacity. "Having made this conjuration" in half a verse summarizes the second part, the aspect of warning. The next half a verse summarizes the third part: exhortation. "Once the people had entered the city" in one verse summarizes the third part: attaining benefit.
