This sūtra is not preached at all, but once preached, cause and effect are both elucidated; therefore, the lotus serves as a metaphor for cause and effect. Second, because the flower opens, the fruit appears; because of verbal teaching, the principle is revealed; therefore, the lotus serves as a metaphor for principle and teaching; hence the sūtra says: 'Its meaning is deep and far-reaching, its words are skillful and subtle.' Third, while the flower has not opened, the fruit has not appeared; when the flower opens, then the fruit is manifested. When the upāya portal has not been opened, the real characteristic is not manifested; when the upāya portal is opened, then the real characteristic is manifested.
