> Next is the verse on the eight rarities: First, diamond. Second, various precious gems, such as indranīla, mahānīla, and the like. Third, male slaves; in antiquity, criminals were condemned to state servitude and entered the low class as slaves (nú); it is sometimes written with the character jǐn (仅). Fourth, female slaves, an inferior appellation for women. Fifth, carts, a general term for carriages and wheels. Made by Xi Zhong of the Xia dynasty, its ancient pronunciation was jū; it meant a vehicle used to house people while traveling; nowadays chē means "residence," meaning that where travelers dwell is like a house. Sixth, mounts, that is, yoked vehicles, referring to what can be ridden; the Rites of Zhou says, "shèng means to carry," referring to elephants, horses, and the like. Seventh, jewel-adorned carriages, drawn carts pulled by men in front. In antiquity, ministers and grand masters also rode in them; from the Han dynasty onwards, the Son of Heaven rode in them, and thus today the carriage ridden by the Son of Heaven and the Empress is called a niǎn. Eighth, jewel-adorned litters; yú is pronounced with the fanqie of 余 (yú) and 據 (jù) or 余 (yú) and 居 (jū); the Shuowen says: "A carriage frame." Moreover, a vehicle without wheels is called a yú; it means to ride or carry. Some write it with the character 輿; this is incorrect. All are adorned with rarities, so it says "jewel-adorned."
