> The next verse is the meaning of giving fulfilling the pāramitā. The Cheng weishi lun says: "Only when possessing seven appropriations does it achieve the marks of a pāramitā; if lacking them, it is not one." A verse should say: / "Abiding, and resting upon, / aspiration, and enterprise, / skillful means, dedication, and purity: / the fulfillment of a pāramitā is due to these seven." / Here it merely cites one, dedicating toward bodhi; the remaining six can be known by inference. "Wishing to attain the Buddha-vehicle, the foremost in the three realms" is precisely the intention of dedication. The next \[verse\] is miscellaneous goods. Sì (駟) is pronounced with the fanqie of 息 (xī) and 利 (lì); in antiquity, four horses pulling one chariot drove it, so one could gallop; the four stars of the Room Mansion are called the Heavenly Steeds (tiānsì), and humans imitated them. Lán (欄) means railings, or gates and barriers. Either lán (欄) or lán (闌) is acceptable. Some write it as the aromatic herb lán (蘭), which is not this meaning. Shǔn (楯) has the fanqie of 食 (shí) and 尹 (yǐn) or 時 (shí) and 名 (míng), meaning balustrades. Vertical ones are called kǎn, and horizontal ones are called shǔn. Huā (華) is pronounced with the fanqie of 戶 (hù) and 華 (huá). According to the popular explanation, when the Yellow Emperor fought Chi You in the wilderness of Zhuolu, there was always five-colored vapor like golden branches and jade leaves hovering above the Emperor, with the shape of flowers (huā); consequently they made a canopy (huāgài), meaning a splendid canopy. According to the factual explanation, in the hot summer of the Western Regions, people mostly carry canopies adorned with flowers, called flower-canopies; huā (華) has the sound of flower (花). Xuān (軒) is pronounced with the fanqie of 虛 (xū) and 言 (yán), meaning a comfortable chariot, simply a curved-shaft cart with side screens. Using objects to enhance its adornment is called "adorned." Some write xiǎn (幰) for "adorned," pronounced with the fanqie of 虛 (xū) and 偃 (yǎn); cloth stretched over a chariot to ward off heat is called a xiǎn. The chariot is yoked to four horses, flanked with decorative railings and balustrades, with a flower canopy set above and curtains spread for stately adornment, and given away in charity.
