> Mañjuśrī means 'Wondrous Auspiciousness'; granting joy to sentient beings, he is the Buddha Joy-Treasury Jewel-Accumulation Mani of the World of Constant Joy in the north, hearing whose name can extinguish grave offenses such as the four parājikas. It is also said that in the past he was the Buddha Supreme Wisdom Respected King of the Nāga Race, and it is said that he will become a buddha in the future as well; the Avataṃsaka-sūtra says he is here on Mount Qingliang (Wutai), together with ten thousand bodhisattvas. Avalokiteśvarāya means 'Contemplator of Sovereignty'; contemplating the three karmas \[of those who\] take refuge and removing the suffering of sentient beings, in abbreviated form he is called Guanyin. The Guanyin shouji jing says: 'After Amitābha Buddha passes into extinction, he will next become a buddha named King of the Mountain of Universal Radiant Merit. After this Buddha passes into extinction, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva will next become a buddha named King of the Well-Abiding Treasure of Merit.' As for 'Obtaining Great Strength' (Mahāsthāmaprāpta), wherever he arrives, worlds tremble and there is great majesty; sentient beings who encounter him naturally have their suffering cease and obtain great, superior joy; he possesses the preceding two abilities.
