> Because the seeds of afflictions of the two vehicles are exhausted and they attain extinction, they are called having exited the house. In the first kalpa, afflictions still operate; how could they be called having exited the house? Furthermore, when the fragmented \[death\] of the seventh stage is exhausted in this one lifetime, it is also called exiting the house, because it is the same as the two vehicles. Prior to that is not so, because there are still many lives, like the class of learners; therefore, only after exiting the house do they board the ox cart. However, in the initial 'opening' of this sūtra text, it first generally marks the supreme import with the words 'causing them to attain purity'; the subsequent three distinctively reveal it, and hence it is omitted from mention.
