These have five virtues: First, their minds are pure: they exclusively seek the Mahāyāna, the wisdom of the Buddha, and do not delight in what is base and inferior, because they eliminate the two hindrances. Second, being pliant and humble-minded, they can endure toil and weariness, are capable of performing great deeds, and are vigorously diligent without cessation. Third, having keen faculties, they are by nature prone to eradicate suffering and delight in bestowing joy upon others, treating all equally, and swiftly penetrating the Dharma upon hearing it. Fourth, for immeasurable \[kalpas\] under the buddhas, having long met with wholesome conditions, they constantly polish themselves. Fifth, they practice the profound and subtle path, cultivating both merit and wisdom as a precious standard for true awakening. The Sūtra on Generating the Bodhicitta states that one who possesses ten kinds of dharmas is capable of generating the bodhicitta: 1. associating with good friends (kalyāṇamitra); 2. making offerings to all buddhas; 3. cultivating wholesome roots; 4. aspiring to seek superior dharmas; 5. having an ever-gentle mind; 6. being able to endure when encountering suffering; 7. having sincere and profound loving-kindness and compassion; 8. having a deeply impartial mind; 9. loving and delighting in the Mahāyāna; 10. seeking the Buddha's wisdom. All these are subsumed under these five \[virtues\]: 'Purity of mind' subsumes the two phrases: 'loving and delighting in the Mahāyāna' and 'seeking the Buddha's wisdom'. 'Pliant' subsumes the two phrases: 'having an ever-gentle mind' and 'being able to endure when encountering suffering'. 'Keen faculties' subsumes the two phrases: 'having sincere and profound loving-kindness and compassion' and 'having a deeply impartial mind'. 'Under immeasurable buddhas' subsumes the two phrases: 'associating with good friends' and 'making offerings to all buddhas'. 'Practicing the profound and subtle \[path\]' subsumes the two phrases: 'cultivating wholesome roots' and 'aspiring to seek superior dharmas'.
