> Eulogy: Below, the Buddha explains the benefit, and the broad text is divided into three: first, a general and brief indicative reply, serving as the reason for consenting to speak; next, from 'Śāriputra, if in a country, city' down, directly preaching the Dharma and parable to enlighten them; and later, in the verses from 'Told Śāriputra: You and the others are all my children, and I am the father' down, encouraging faith in this sūtra and joy in the future Buddha wisdom. The first part is again divided into two: first, clarifying what was already preached as a general and brief indicative reply; second, further stating it as the reason for consenting to speak. This is the first. Initially preaching expedient means served as a stepping stone to the real; initially transforming śrāvakas served as the cause for bodhisattvas. As the Expedient Means Chapter states: 'Knowing that sentient beings have various desires, according with their fundamental natures, he preaches the Dharma through various expedient means; all of this is for the sake of obtaining the One Buddha Vehicle and omniscience.' This means that what was previously preached as provisional is now preached as real. Why this was done was to convert bodhisattvas; because of this rationale, he explains the reason. Therefore, it is called a general and brief indicative reply.
