> Commentary: If they give rise to slander, they will sink into and be entangled in the evil destinies. Although sentient beings have the seeds of transcendence, because their active manifestations have not arisen, they are still called 'young and small'. / 'Childish' (zhi 稚) means small. / 'Not yet having discernment' means they have not aroused actualized wisdom to comprehend the profound and wondrous buddhadharma of the Mahāyāna; they are attached to the three realms. If one were immediately to expound the Mahāyāna for them, due to their attachment to the three realms they would on the contrary give rise to slander and further arouse defilements and karma; they might fall accordingly and forever sink into places of hardship. If they follow along and practice, they will escape; if they slander, they will forever sink—because it is indefinite, it is said 'they might'. / Being harmed by defilements is called 'being burned by the fire'. The meaning here is that if one immediately expounded the Single Vehicle for them, because they are addicted to saṃsāra, they would destroy the Dharma without faith and fall into evil destinies instead. This was the case in past lives, and it is also so in this life; hence the previous chapter says: 'If I were only to praise the Buddha Vehicle... they would fall into the three evil destinies,' and so forth.
