- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [6.52](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1723.6.52)

> The Commentary says: This symbolizes that although they have pure absorption that subdues afflictions, afflictions arise again. The noble ones have pure absorption and afflictions do not arise; although those \[worldly beings\] possess pure absorption, they lack true merit and wisdom, which is termed "scant merit and virtue." Being further burned by afflictions such as greed, delusion, pride, doubt, personality view, and extreme views, is called being "oppressed by the fire." Unable to eradicate these afflictions, they still give rise to clinging to views, disparaging and refuting each other, which is called "tearing at each other." Clinging to their own superior path is like drinking blood, because cognitive objects of views are subtle. Giving rise to rigid attachment to attachment to precepts and practices is like eating flesh, because external matters are coarse. The character dan 噉 \[eating\] is pronounced tu gan fan, meaning to eat. It is sometimes written as dan 啖, pronounced tun gan fan.
