> Regarding explaining the name, the Yogācārabhūmi has five explanations: First, it says that bound by afflictions, one arises repeatedly in the various destinies, hence it is called ‘dependent origination’ (pratītyasamutpāda), explaining the name based on the words ‘dependent’ (pratītya) and ‘origination’ (samutpāda). Second, relying upon numerous conditions, after rapidly perishing, it arises successively in combination, hence it is called dependent origination; this explains the name based on the meaning of momentariness. It excludes the Mahāsāṃghika and others who hold the twelve links of dependent origination to be unconditioned phenomena, and also excludes the Sammatīya view of the four characteristics spanning an entire life-period. Third, numerous conditions pass away yet do not abandon \[their efficacy\], and arising is obtained based on their own continuum, hence it is called dependent origination. As it says: ‘When this exists, that exists; with the arising of this, that arises,’ and not otherwise. Here, dependent origination is explained according to this meaning. ‘When this exists, that exists’ reveals the meaning of conditioned arising without an agent. ‘With the arising of this, that arises’ reveals the meaning of impermanent conditioned arising. ‘Not otherwise’ means that only through the existence of conditions can the result-phenomenon exist; it is not that conditions possess a real function capable of producing the result-phenomenon, nor is it that with an unarisen phenomenon as cause, any produced phenomenon is established. Fourth, repeatedly perishing and again arising in continuation, hence it is called dependent origination; this is explained according to the meaning of repeated destruction and repeated cessation. Fifth, having awakened to the conditioned nature in past times, it arises continuously and equally, hence it is called dependent origination. As the World-Honoured One said: ‘Having awakened, I arose and proclaimed it equally.’ Precisely due to this name, it was transmitted successively; hence it is called dependent origination. It also says that it means being free from a sentient being, because there is no spontaneous self, up to meaning produced by one's own karma, because one does not receive retribution in another continuum. Furthermore, the Abhidharmasamuccaya and the Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra each have eleven explanations. The Abhidharmasamuccaya also says: ‘Conditioned arising without an agent, impermanent conditioned arising, and conditioned arising by efficacy.’ The first two are as before. ‘Ignorance conditions formations’ and so forth reveal conditioned arising by efficacy: although all phenomena are without an agent and impermanent, it is not that all fruits arise conditioned on any single phenomenon, because the capacities of phenomena are each distinct.”
