Having cultivated the causes of the Great Vehicle for not yet sixty kalpas, they grew weary of cultivating the bodhisattva practices; this is called being "exhausted and indolent midway." The great practice is difficult to cultivate, and its hardships and bitterness were thoroughly undergone; this is called being "fatigued to the utmost." Because the duration of their weariness was long, it is called being "fatigued to the utmost." Fearing the ocean of noble practices, cowed at proceeding with cultivation, they are further said to have "fear and dread." Because of fearing the greatness of the practice, it is called "fear and dread." Being unable to advance in seeking the fruit of great bodhi, with three great kalpas elapsed and the road ahead still far, retreating from the Great \[Vehicle\] and not training, returning to abide in saṃsāra—this is called "now wishing to turn back." This is stated in terms of principle.
