> The Commentary says: This explains the practice regarding much Dharma. They abandon the fruits of pure karma in pure lands, in the heavens, and in the two higher realms, and do not take birth there, but instead take birth in this place. The \*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\* says: 'Because non-retrogressing bodhisattvas deeply cherish the Dharma, when they hear it, their deep minds \[are moved\] and the hairs on their bodies stand on end. When they contemplate the Buddha's kindness and compassion, they grieve and weep; when they hear the profound Dharma, they experience great joy. It is like an army defeated, where people fall to the ground terrified and faint as if dead; when their relatives see them and wish to know if they are alive, they whip them with a stick—if welts rise, they know they are alive, and if welts do not rise, they know they are not alive. Bodhisattvas are also like this: if, upon hearing the Buddha's virtues and marvelous principles expounded, they rejoice with their hairs standing on end, their countenance changes, and they weep, you should know that such persons will certainly attain bodhi; if, hearing the sūtra otherwise, they have no such unusual signs, you should know that such persons have no share of bodhi.' The \*Prajñāpāramitā-śāstra\* says: 'Merit does not tend toward bodhi; two \[things\] can tend toward bodhi.' How much more so for one who can fully accept and uphold this—none but a great bodhisattva has such pity.
