> Eulogy: Below, the adorned characteristics are clarified. There are two parts: first, clarifying the eight adornments; thereafter, re-clarifying the adorned characteristics of banners and canopies. This is the first. Externally adorning the jeweled stūpa symbolizes that internally the Buddha's body and the Lotus Sūtra both possess virtues as adornments: first, "various adornments" symbolizes the complete endowment of the myriad virtues. Second, "five thousand balustrades" symbolizes the powers of faith, vigor, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. Each is nourished and developed by the hundred courses of action to become five hundred, and each eliminates the ten unwholesome deeds, hence becoming five thousand. Third, "tens of millions of niches" represents that dhyāna concentrations are extremely numerous. "Kān" (龕) is pronounced in the fanqie kǒu-hán (口含); it means a stūpa niche. One source says it is the appearance of a dragon, but that is not the meaning here; now we follow the first. The Yupian states: "Kān is pronounced in the fanqie kū-dān (枯耽); it means to receive, contain, and take." Fourth, "standards" (dhvaja) symbolizes the lofty prominence of wisdom and virtue. Fifth, "banners" (patākā) symbolizes the various dhāraṇīs overturning and extinguishing all evils. Sixth, "necklaces" symbolizes the three applications of mindfulness. Seventh, "jeweled bells" symbolizes the four analytical knowledges. Eighth, "emitting fragrance" symbolizes cultivating the fivefold Dharmakāya, realizing truth and extinguishing delusion, which is precisely the immaculate, noble sandalwood fragrance, pervading the four modes of birth to extinguish all afflictions and enable realization of tathatā.
