> The commentary says: The eighteen verses below explain their forbearance. They are divided into two parts: first, sixteen verses on practicing forbearance and upholding \[the sūtra\]; later, two verses on exhorting its expounding and upholding. In the first text there are four parts: one verse on enduring verbal abuse and physical beatings; nine and a half verses on enduring arrogance and slander; three verses on enduring humiliation; two and a half verses on enduring expulsion and keeping silent. This is the first. For mài (罵, verbal abuse), the sounds are the fanqie spellings mò-xià and mò-bà. For lì (詈, cursing), the sound is the fanqie spelling lì-zhì; lì also means verbal abuse. Here it is explained that malicious words aimed at someone are called mài, while defamation and cursing are called lì.
