> The Commentary says: Below is the third section. It first covers avoiding: the sixth condition—prolonging defilement; the seventh condition—unfit vessels; the eighth condition—incurring censure; the ninth condition—improper comportment; and the tenth condition—distraction. Subsequently, it explains one's own practice. Among the five to be avoided, this passage contains two: the sixth condition—prolonging defilement; and the seventh condition—unfit vessels. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya says: “Just as cooked food is eaten by people, so too are all women: they cause people to form attached craving and be unable to relinquish it.” The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: “The formless clear wind can still be caught; a viper harboring venom can still be touched; but the mind of a woman is difficult to grasp. Holding a sword against an enemy, one can still prevail; but the female bandit harming people is difficult to stop.” The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya states: “Constantly visiting the homes of householders has five faults: first, constantly seeing women; second, having seen them often, becoming mutually close; third, turning to intimacy; fourth, then generating thoughts of desire; fifth, sometimes leading to death or anguish close to death. Therefore, one should stay far away from them.” The five kinds of non-men are: by birth, by castrating, by jealousy, by half-month, and by sprinkling. Because of having two faults, the afflictions of both male and female are always concurrently active. Good people are difficult to find, and since they are not vessels for the Dharma, one should not approach them intimately.
