> Next, the meanings are indeed many; they are briefly modeled on before and after to synthesize six metaphors: First, for the sake of the lotus, there is the blossom, a metaphor that for the sake of the real, there is the provisional; hence below it says, "Knowing the foremost quiescence, through the power of skillful means, although showing various paths, in truth they are for the sake of the Buddha Vehicle," and so forth. Second, the blossom opening is a metaphor for opening the provisional; the lotus appearing is a metaphor for revealing the real; below the text says, "opening the gateway of skillful means and revealing the true mark." Third, the blossom falling is a metaphor for discarding the provisional; the lotus forming is a metaphor for establishing the real; below the text says, "uprightly discarding skillful means, only expounding the unsurpassed path." Fourth, again, the lotus is a metaphor for the fundamental (mūla), while the blossom is a metaphor for the traces (śākhā); from the fundamental, traces are projected; the traces rely upon the fundamental; below the text says, "At the time of the turmoil of the kalpa-defilement," up to saying, "Therefore, the buddhas, the Tathāgatas, by the power of skillful means, distinguishably expound three within the one Buddha Vehicle," and so forth. Fifth, the blossom opening is a metaphor for opening the traces; the lotus appearing is a metaphor for revealing the fundamental; below it says, "Listen attentively, all of you, to the power of the Tathāgata's secret supernormal abilities," up to "the time since I achieved buddhahood surpasses this number," and so forth. Sixth, the blossom falling is a metaphor for discarding the traces; the lotus forming is a metaphor for establishing the fundamental; below the text says, "The Dharma of the buddhas, the Tathāgatas, is all like this; for the sake of saving sentient beings, all is real and not false," and so forth. Therefore, first the Wondrous Dharma is designated, and next the lotus flower is used as a metaphor, clearing away the attachment to the teaching of the conjured city, discarding the lingering sentiment of the straw hut, opening the provisional gateway of skillful means, demonstrating the wondrous principle of the real, converging the minor practices of myriad goods, returning to the vast and great One Vehicle, and conferring prophecies to all of superior, middling, and inferior faculties. Furthermore, it reveals the provisional practices of the multitude of sages and displays the profound subtleties of the fundamental ground, thereby increasing the path and diminishing the four births, making one border upon the Great Awakening. In this single period of teaching and transformation, both phenomena and principle are now fully consummated. The intent of the metaphor of the lotus flower lies in this.
