> Answer: That master resolves it, saying: 'When the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra states that "they can ultimately never be caused to sit at the bodhimaṇḍa and realize unsurpassable complete enlightenment," it clarifies that they definitely enter \[nirvāṇa\] without remainder and can never be caused not to enter \[nirvāṇa\] without remainder and directly realize unsurpassable complete enlightenment; for this reason they are said to be exclusively oriented toward tranquility. However, when those śrāvakas enter \[nirvāṇa\] without remainder, they abide for eighty thousand kalpas, or for sixty thousand, forty thousand, or twenty thousand, and then afterwards generate the resolve to enter the Mahāyāna, take birth in a pure land, and complete the buddha-way. If we speak of people of aniyata-gotra, they enter the Mahāyāna while abiding only in the stage with remainder, as the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra clearly explains. Therefore, that sūtra also does not conflict. When the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā says that the Ekayāna teaching is an upāya, it conveys the intention of the provisional Triyāna teaching and is not an exposition of the ultimate principle—just as those who grasp to the Triyāna say that the fifteen \[dhātus\] with outflows and the eight indeterminate \[dhātus\] are expounded with respect to the realm of coarse characteristics and are not the ultimate real principle. Therefore, one should know that the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā occasionally conveys texts of the upāya teaching. By this principle, there is no conflict.'
