> Second, explaining benevolence and compassion: Compassion is called pitying and grieving; benevolence is called loving and caring. Because of pitying, one pulls out suffering; because of caring, one gives joy. If a bodhisattva only gives rise to benevolence and compassion, his mind is not firm; therefore he must make vast vows to empower it and make it steadfast. For example, when a craftsman makes an object, though the joints and mortises correspond to each other, if there is no glue and lacquer, it will fall apart; vows are like glue, and it is just so here. With a mind of compassion, pitying and grieving, pulling out the causes and effects of suffering and origination in the world, he raises two vows: namely, 'Sentient beings are boundless, I vow to deliver them; afflictions are measureless, I vow to sever them.' These two vows arise from the mind of great compassion. Because of benevolent love, wishing to bestow the joy of the world-transcending causes and effects of the path and cessation, he raises two vows: namely, 'Dharma gates are boundless, I vow to know them; the unsurpassed Buddha path, I vow to achieve it.' These two vows arise from the mind of great benevolence.
