> Question: Why can the good and evil of innate virtue not be eradicated? Answer: The good and evil of nature are merely dharma-doors of good and evil; nature cannot be altered, traversing the three periods of time with none able to destroy it, nor can it be severed or ruined. For example, although Māra burned the sūtras, how could he cause the dharma-door of innate good to be exhausted? Even if the Buddha were to burn the records of evil, he still could not cause the dharma-door of evil to be exhausted. Just as when Qin burned the canons and buried the scholars, how could it cause good and evil to be completely severed?
