> Second, from "The mind of compassion..." onward, shows the stirring of the mind, in two parts: First, two vows explain compassion. Since the term 'worldly' generally indicates both the two triple worlds, what comes later regarding the 'transmundane' should also be patterned after this. Second, from "With kindness..." onward, two vows explain kindness. Previously, in extracting suffering, the fruit was heavy and the cause was light, hence the heavy was extracted first; now, in bestowing joy, the cause is manifest and the fruit is subtle, hence the manifest is bestowed first. This is the bodhisattva's mind to benefit beings, differing from the śrāvaka who knows suffering, severs its accumulation, admires the fruit, and cultivates the cause. In the \*Yingluo jing\*, explaining the four vows, it states: "Those who have not crossed over the truth of suffering, make them cross over the truth of suffering; those who have not understood the truth of accumulation, make them understand the truth of accumulation; those who have not settled in the truth of the path, make them settle in the truth of the path; those who have not attained the truth of cessation, make them attain the truth of cessation." The four established in that sūtra are all for benefiting others. The three listed in the present text also extend to one's own practice; one should know that while the words speak of self and other, the intent must fully contain both. Second, from "However, the preceding..." onward, discriminates characteristics according to the four teachings. Because making vows must rely on the four truths, if one does not rely on the truths, they are called wild vows. Why? Since the four are called truths, they can scrutinize and verify the characteristics of delusion and awakening, the boundaries of suffering and joy; only by initiating vows on this basis is there the principle of extracting suffering and bestowing joy. If one is not truthful toward phenomena and vainly raises the mind of bestowing and extracting, it will ultimately become a wild and reckless vow. This has two parts: First, parallels the preceding section. Second, from "If the Tripiṭaka..." onward, explains establishing vows in reliance on truths across the four teachings. One must know that the provisional and real each have matter and principle; therefore, the characteristics of the truths are explained through the four teachings. Arising and perishing, non-arising, immeasurable, and non-contrived—all explain the bodhisattva's initiating vows in reliance upon them. First, the Tripiṭaka \[Teaching\]. For those heavily deluded about the real, this teaching speaks of mundane and transmundane two causes and two fruits; because they are not identical to the real principle, they mutually arise and perish. The bodhisattva, contemplating this, raises contrived vows: there are sentient beings to be crossed over, afflictions to be severed, teachings to be known, and Buddhahood to be accomplished. All four are contrived; it is the truth that makes them so.
