> Fifth, universality of entering Dharma gates has two parts: first, explaining that the biased and lesser are not universal. When cultivation does not accord with the nature, realization has graded differences. As for "I only know..." and so forth, in the Avataṃsaka Sudhana seeks good spiritual friends, traversing one hundred and ten cities, and the spiritual friends he meets all say: "I only know this one Dharma gate." In the new sūtra, when he reaches the fiftieth and sees Maitreya, and the fifty-third and sees Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra, they no longer say they only know one Dharma; thus we know this is gradual first and sudden later. Second, from "If entering..." onward, being called universal with reference to the perfect and sudden, which has three parts: first, the doctrine. The Great Sūtra explains the twenty-five kingly samādhis, which break the twenty-five states of existence and reveal the self-nature. Samādhi is translated here as "harmonizing and upright concentration". As for being called "kingly", the Miaoxuan says: "Harmonizing and straightening emptiness and conventionality cannot be called kingly. Therefore, the two vehicles entering emptiness and bodhisattvas emerging into the conventional are not named Dharma kings; harmonizing and straightening the middle path can be called kingly." Second, the metaphor. Third, the combination. Beneath the three truths and outside the rational concentration, there are various kinds of samādhis that aid the path, which are called retinue.
