> Third, the respectful deportment consists of three: first, rising; second, baring \[the shoulder\]; third, joining the palms. As for rising, the Rites says: "Rise to request instruction, rise to request guidance in learning." The bodhisattva is fully equipped with both deportments toward the Buddha, hence it says "rose." In contemplative interpretation, because the bodhisattva constantly cultivates the practice of detachment, it says "rose"; it is also according with the emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness itself being the seat, and being without defiled attachment to this emptiness, it therefore says "rose." Furthermore, the bodhisattva dwells securely in the principle of emptiness, and the principle originally has no rising; out of pity for sentient beings, riding upon their capacity to bring benefit, it therefore says "rose." Furthermore, the quiescence of the middle way is neither rising nor non-rising, yet able to rise and able not to rise. Rising of non-rising, rising is itself the true mark, and it also raises the true mark of sentient beings; hence it says "rose."
