> Question: In the Avataṃsaka, the sudden \[teaching came first\], and only afterward was small transformation applied. This is like the impoverished son: if pursued urgently he will not arrive, but if spoken to gently he will come. With the sudden before and the gradual after, its meaning is properly established. How can it now be said that descending into the mother's womb immediately displays both marks? Answer: What various texts discuss regarding the sudden first and gradual next is merely the language of the expedient arrangement of teaching methods. What is stated here—that both the great and the small respond simultaneously, ultimately returning to the One Vehicle—only then completely discerns capacities from beginning to end. Just as in the "Expedient Means" chapter, \[the Buddha\] considered that there were no capacities for the great and intended to cease teaching, and only upon the encouragement of all buddhas did he apply the Hīnayāna; yet the subsequent text conversely says, "For immeasurable kalpas I have praised the Dharma of nirvāṇa; that saṃsāra is forever ended, this I have always taught." Therefore, considering capacities and then applying the small—these descriptions are all ritual frameworks and cannot be relied upon to challenge the present text. Anticipating and discerning the multitude of capacities from first to last is the intention behind saving sentient beings.
