> The sūtra says: The Buddha said, “Its cognitions are inexhaustible. To speak of them briefly, its cognitions are four. What are the four? First is determinate cognition, which is called following thusness; second is indeterminate cognition, which is called skillful crushing; third is nirvāṇa cognition, which is called eliminating lightning-like awareness; fourth is ultimate cognition, which is called entering reality and completing the path. Elder! These four great functionings of affairs were spoken by the past buddhas: they are a great bridge, they are a great ferry crossing. If transforming sentient beings, one should apply these cognitions.”
