> From “The wisdom of the buddhas…” onward, one and a half verses constitute the fourth \[section\], which shows its subtlety by contrasting it \[with ordinary consciousness\]. Because this wisdom of the bhūmis is the sphere of the buddhas, it is called the “wisdom of the buddhas.” “Free from all mental factors” means that this wisdom differs from the sphere of reflective wisdom. “Free from the path of the mind” means that it differs from the cognitive wisdom of karmically resultant consciousness. Those two can be explained, but because this wisdom is not their sphere, it is said to be “inexplicable.” Regarding “it cannot be conceived,” because it is neither known by the auditory consciousness nor deliberated upon by the mental consciousness, this shows that it cannot be heard. Regarding “it does not consist of aggregates, realms, or sense bases,” if there were aggregates, realms, and sense bases, with distinctions such as form, mind, faculties, objects, and consciousnesses, it could be explained. Realizing wisdom is not like this; being without subject and object, impartial and non-conceptual, it is free from words and inexplicable. Therefore, it can only be realized inwardly through realizing wisdom and cannot be conceptualized, for it cannot be comprehended by defiled consciousness. The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra states: “Grasping characteristics is called consciousness; not grasping characteristics is called wisdom.” This is what is meant. The treatise says: “‘Wisdom’ is the wisdom of the bhūmis, which is fundamental wisdom.” Through what does it arise? Contemplation, because the preliminary contemplation-wisdom arouses the fundamental wisdom. By what does it practice together? Because the other practices, such as giving, also assist in its arising. From “Like tracks in space…” onward, the fifth \[section\] comprises one verse that adduces a simile to reveal its subtlety; the first half adduces the simile, and the second half reveals the Dharma. In this simile, three gates are briefly established: First, distinguishing the difference with respect to the preceding: What is the difference between this and the previous drawing in space? Great space illustrates the ocean of fruition, the location of tracks illustrates the essence of the bhūmis, the characteristics of tracks illustrate the characteristics of the bhūmis, and bird feet illustrate verbal teaching. As for the difference in intent: the former simile showed that the dharma of the bhūmis is difficult to speak of and difficult to hear, resulting in silence without speaking; the present simile shows that the dharma of the bhūmis is difficult to speak of and difficult to hear, admonishing the assembly to abandon attachment, while promising to proclaim it. Second, revealing the intended meaning: When a bird flies through space, after its body has passed, the location of its tracks cannot be spoken of, nor can its form and appearance be seen. Yet, the bird having flown, one cannot say it did not happen. It is not that because the bird has flown there are characteristics of tracks to be grasped; nor is it that because there are no characteristics of tracks there was no bird flight at all. The bird’s flight illustrates the verbal teaching, and the characteristics of tracks illustrate the dharma of the bhūmis. Seeking tracks by pursuing the bird, tracks cannot be found; seeking the bhūmis by pursuing words, the bhūmis cannot be found. One only provisionally speaks of ten tracks according to the bird flying ten paces, when in reality there are no distinctions among ten tracks; one differentiates ten bhūmis according to words, when in reality there are no distinct characteristics of the bhūmis. Therefore, the ten bhūmis are like ten tracks in space—how could there be any distinction? Question: Just as for a bird in space, where it has flown, has not flown, and is presently flying are all devoid of tracks, could it be that under the words of the ten bhūmis there is no signified meaning? Answer: Because there is the space traversed, there is a signified meaning. Question: If the bird's feet in space cannot manifest tracks, and since the principle is not revealed under the words, of what use are these words? Answer: When a bird walks on sand and soil, its feet manifest tracks; when a bird flies in space, its feet manifest tracklessness. The verbal teachings of the Hīnayāna reveal meaning corresponding to words; the verbal teachings of the Mahāyāna reveal meaning free from words. If there were no flight of the bird, there would be no way to know that empty space is devoid of tracks. Hence we know that the bird's flight can reveal tracklessness; it is not that there is no signifier. That which is illustrated can be known from this.
