> Second, within leaving stealing, there are also three parts: First, within leaving the causes, by analogy with killing there should be two causes: insufficiency of requisites for living is the external cause, and greed and so forth are the internal causes. Why are the internal causes not mentioned? Explanation: Because they are the same as before, they are not repeated. Another explanation: internally harboring contentment is the cause of leaving stealing. Furthermore, because on the first bhūmi and above one attains inexhaustible wealth, it states that requisites for living are always sufficient. Second, leaving through antidotes: regarding one's own property, one will be able to renounce and give it away, so that the resulting fruit of great future wealth will not be ruined. The sūtra text of the treatise calls this 'not ruining another's wealth', referring to wealth in another lifetime. This sūtra omits this phrase. Third, leaving through fruit and action also has two kinds: subtle refers to grass and leaves, coarse refers to requisites. The two karmas of killing and sexual misconduct arise in relation to the primary retribution of other sentient beings; the subtle is in terms of mental thought, and the coarse concerns bodily actions. Requisites pertain to external property, where items have degrees of subtlety and coarseness, by which gravity and lightness are distinguished. The sūtra text of the treatise lists five conditions; here conditions three and four are omitted, and the rest are as clarified in the treatise.
