> Second, from 'well gathering merit' downward clarifies excellence in cultivation. In this, there are eleven kinds: 1. Having tirelessness as the cause, gathering merit and increasing it. 2. Relying on vigor as the cause, seeking wisdom without abandoning it. 3. The explanation is evident as in the treatise. 4. Not giving rise to improper thoughts, causing morality to be radiant and pure; the treatise text lacks this line. The above four are practices of one's own stage; below clarifies superior advancement practices. 5. Giving rise to the practice of the dharmas of the Buddha's fruition. 6. Giving rise to the practice of the Buddha's dependent retribution, the pure land; the explanation in the treatise provides two kinds of adornment: first, in terms of persons, meaning the purity of sentient beings in the dwelling place—being free from defilement is the virtue of eradication, and firm wisdom is the virtue of wisdom; second, in terms of dharmas, meaning taking the manifold meritorious dharmas of the Buddha's fruition stage as adornment. 7. Relying on the marks, signs, and dharmakāya of the Buddha's direct retribution, giving rise to that practice and aspiration. 8. Relying on the function of the Buddha's three karmas to give rise to practice. 9. The practice of revering the Dharma; because practice is accomplished by relying on the Dharma, one reverently seeks it. 10. Vowing to take rebirth in the three realms of existence, skillfully gathering sentient beings; remaining unstained while amidst defilement is called 'the mind being unobstructed'. 11. Constantly being mindful day and night of gathering sentient beings, freed from the mindset of the Small Vehicle; this is called 'free from other minds'.
