> Second, within properly abiding in the bhūmi, extensively revealing the meaning of dependent origination, four gates are briefly established: first, generally clarifying the dependent origination of the dharmadhātu; second, specifically analyzing the twelve factors of existence; third, discerning distinctions; fourth, properly explaining the text. First, the dependent origination of the dharmadhātu briefly has three meanings: first, dependent origination in terms of defiled phenomena; second, in terms of pure phenomena; third, combined explanation of defilement and purity. Within the first there are four gates: first, the gate of conditions converging in one mind; second, the gate of subsuming the root into the branches; third, the gate of subsuming the branches into the root; fourth, the gate of mutual dependence of root and branches; all are as explained elsewhere. Second, dependent origination of pure phenomena also has four gates: first, fundamentally existing; second, produced through cultivation; third, fundamentally existing and produced through cultivation; fourth, produced through cultivation and fundamentally existing; as explained below in the section on "Nature Manifestation." Third, the combined explanation of defilement and purity also has four gates: first, the gate of overturning defilement to manifest purity; second, the gate of responding to defilement with purity; third, the gate of converging defilement to be identical with purity; fourth, the gate of the exhaustion of defilement and the cessation of purity; also as explained elsewhere. Second, specifically explaining the twelve factors of existence is fully set forth in a separate chapter.
