> Fifth, from "This bodhisattva well knows the arising of such..." downward explains the section on masteries (vaśitā). Regarding these ten masteries, four topics are briefly treated: 1. discerning their characteristics; 2. curing hindrances; 3. identifying their causes; 4. the stages of their attainment. First, discerning their characteristics is fully revealed as in the Śāstra's Sūtra \[text\]. Second, curing hindrances refers to counteracting the ten hindrances, as fully revealed in the Daśabhūmika-śāstra; since the Śāstra is shared with this \[sūtra\], it need not be recorded here. Third, identifying the causes: based on the tenth excellence in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the six pāramitās are taken as their causes. The first three have giving as their cause: through giving at all times one attains mastery over life; through giving in all places one attains mastery over mind; through giving all things one attains mastery over material wealth. The next two have morality as their cause: by morality one disciplines body and speech to accomplish superior karma, and further, through purity of morality, one takes birth according to one's desires. Patience is the cause of mastery over conviction-resolve: because when practicing patience one conforms to the minds of sentient beings, one thereby attains everything transforming in accordance with the mind—that is, transforming earth into gold and so forth all transform in accord with superior conviction-resolve. Vigor is the cause of vows: because through exerted diligence what one undertakes is never lax or abandoned, one causes whatever one vows to be accomplished as wished. Dhyāna is the cause of psychic power (ṛddhi)—that is called mastery over supernatural power: because relying on concentration one gives rise to superknowledges, accomplishing \[things\] at will. Prajñā is the cause of the latter two: internally illuminating what is known is called mastery over knowledge; expounding in response to faculties is called mastery over Dharma. Fourth, explaining the stages of their attainment: the Mahāyānasaṃgraha explains what is attained on the Buddha-stage in terms of the fruition—that is, what is subsumed internally as accomplished by the pure dharmas among the five aspects of the dharmakāya; here, it is explained as attained on the eighth bhūmi in terms of the cause; this is spoken in terms of the Beginning and Final Teachings. Below, the ten masteries in the "Leaving the World" Chapter pervade all stages in terms of the position of Samantabhadra. Furthermore, the statement above in the "Chief of the Virtuous" Chapter on the ten kinds of powers of mastery of the ten bhūmis and so forth is spoken in terms of the Special Teaching of the One Vehicle.
