### [14.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1733.14.24)

> Third, regarding the obstacles abandoned: According to the \*Daśabhūmika-śāstra\*, it abandons the obstacle of inability to skillfully benefit sentient beings. The \*Cheng weishi lun\* states: "The obstacle of lack of desire to act in benefiting others refers to an innate portion within the cognitive obstacles. It causes one to lack the desire to strive diligently in bringing benefit and happiness to sentient beings, taking pleasure instead in cultivating one's own benefit; this obstructs the four unimpeded comprehensions of the ninth bhūmi. Upon entering the ninth bhūmi, one is able to sever it forever; therefore, the ninth bhūmi is said to sever two kinds of ignorance and their coarse heaviness: First, ignorance regarding the mastery of dhāraṇī over the boundless expounded dharmas, boundless names, phrases, and syllables, and subsequent intellectual eloquence. Mastery of dhāraṇī over boundless expounded dharmas refers to the unimpeded comprehension of meaning—that is, total mastery over the signified, because within a single meaning all meanings are manifested. Mastery of dhāraṇī over boundless names, phrases, and syllables refers to the unimpeded comprehension of Dharma—that is, total mastery over the signifier, because within a single name, phrase, or syllable all names, phrases, and syllables are manifested. Mastery of dhāraṇī over subsequent intellectual eloquence refers to the unimpeded comprehension of phrasing, having total mastery over words and sounds in their successive explanations and glosses, because within a single voice all voices are manifested. Second, ignorance regarding mastery of eloquence. Mastery of eloquence refers to the unimpeded comprehension of eloquence, skillfully penetrating capacities and appropriateness so as to expound adroitly. Ignorance can obstruct these four masteries, all of which are subsumed under the ninth obstacle here." Explanation: This takes the seeds of cognitive obstacles that can obstruct the four unimpeded comprehensions as its essential nature, because above the eighth bhūmi, cognitive obstacles in the six consciousnesses do not have active manifestations. The \*Suvarṇaprabhāsa\* states: "First, the ignorance of being unable to retain the boundlessness of preaching the Dharma, the boundlessness of names, syllables, and phrases, and the boundlessness of wisdom's discriminations. Second, the ignorance of not yet having attained mastery in the four unimpeded eloquences." The Liang translation of the \*Mahāyānasaṃgraha\* states: "First, the ignorance regarding the mastery of dhāraṇī over the boundless correct preaching of Dharma, boundless names, phrases, and syllables, and adroit speech in difficult replies; second, the ignorance regarding resolving doubts and generating understanding through the four unimpeded comprehensions." Explanation: The mention of 'the four unimpeded' in the latter refers to the fourth \[unimpeded comprehension\], agreeing with the \*Saṃdhinirmocana\* and others. The rest can all be understood.
