> First, explaining the name: the name 'Immovable' (acalā) also has three senses. First, based on a single sense: the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says, 'Because it cannot be moved by any sign-conditioned, effortful practice, it is called the Immovable Bhūmi.' Asvabhāva and Vasubandhu both share this explanation. Asvabhāva's intended meaning is that in the seventh bhūmi practice is moved while signs are immovable, whereas here both practice and signs are immovable. Second, based on two senses: the Suvarṇaprabhāsa says, 'Practicing with mastery through signless correct contemplation, the practices of the afflictions cannot move it; thus it is called Immovable.' Third, based on three senses: the Cheng weishi lun says, 'Because non-conceptual wisdom continues spontaneously, neither signs, active functions, nor afflictions can move it.' The Liang translation of the Treatise also shares these three senses. The Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra says that because it attains effortlessness through signlessness, and is not moved by afflictions presently arising among all practices, it is called Immovable. The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā says, 'If gods, Māra, Brahmā, śramaṇas, or brāhmaṇas cannot move its vows, it is called the Immovable Bhūmi.' The Renwang jing calls it the Bhūmi of Equal Contemplation.
