> The third major section, the two approaches beginning with 'purity free from evil,' answers the third question regarding the lineage. In the first ten, no fault is not eliminated, hence called 'purity free from evil.' In the latter ten, no virtue is not perfected, hence called 'ultimate purity.' All signify that the lineage is pure, with nothing to be blamed or criticized. Among the first ten: the first is purity of past causes; the second is purity of present fruition, meaning born into the family of the tathāgatas of the three times, which directly answers the question on lineage and is therefore placed at the head; the third is future purity; the fourth is purity of the three times, because all are free of attachment; the fifth is purity of a single flavor; the sixth is purity of manifold virtues; the next two are purity of body and speech; the ninth is purity of fame; the tenth is purity of response to thoughts. In the second, 'ultimate purity,' it is also ultimate freedom from defilement. The first three concern the purity of vows and practice: 'abandoning \*upadhi\*,' regarding which one explanation says: this refers to \*upāsikā\*, meaning abandoning the concept of woman. Another explanation: this translates as 'darkness and dullness,' clarifying that the Buddha has long abandoned them, hence called pure. It is also translated as 'frivolous discourse' (\*prapañca\*), because the Buddha has already abandoned it. The next four concern the purity of locus, manifest person, and family retinue. The last three concern the purity of manifest wisdom and karmic function, which are also the purity of the three virtues of dharmakāya, prajñā, and liberation. The above concludes the answer to the question on lineage.
