> The fifth: the tongue has four marks. In the first, clarifying the broad and long mark, it first presents the name, essence, and cause; next, 'universally illuminating', etc., reveals its karmic function; later, 'giving birth to', etc., clarifies the characteristics of its benefit. In the second, it explains the mark of the surface of the tongue, meaning that the surface of the tongue is adorned with various jewels, hence it says 'firmly abiding'; this clarifies that supreme virtues are complete. 'Firmly abiding in all teachings' clarifies that all the Dharma gates expounded firmly abide within the surface of the tongue; this clarifies that great wisdom is complete. Therefore, the surface of the tongue is named 'ground of the dharmadhātu'. The third clarifies the mark of the tip of the tongue; therein, from 'giving birth to immeasurable' down clarifies the function and benefit, meaning that light illuminating the Buddha ocean is named 'conforming to the dharmadhātu'; also, exquisite sound reaching everywhere is also named 'conforming to the Dharma'; also, causing sentient beings to joyfully hear and conformingly enter the dharmadhātu, this name is thus established. The fourth is also the mark of the tip of the tongue; therein, from 'giving birth to' down, within the function and benefit: first, exquisite sound, etc., praises; second, exquisite virtue, etc., covers; third, exquisite wisdom, etc., enters; fourth, exquisite lands, etc., manifest; hence it is named 'equal Dharma gate'. The Dà zhìdù lùn states that the mark of the tongue covers the face reaching the hairline, yet entering the mouth it does not fill it.
