> Seventeenth, the marks of the shanks are two: First is the mark of the right shank. Aineya: this is the name of a deer; because its shanks resemble the Buddha's, it is taken as a metaphor. Fascicle Five of the Dà zhìdù lùn says: "Like the mark of the shanks of the deer king aineya, gradually slender and delicate." In the function and benefit, first light illuminates and shakes \[the world\]; next the Buddha's voice is universally heard; next nirmāṇakāyas fill everywhere; next the body's light purifies the lands; and finally transformations fill the dharmadhātu: these can all be seen in the text. Second, in the function of the mark of the left shank, light pervades immeasurably, inspiring and transforming the ocean of the Dharma.
