> Second, explaining the names: the general name is as \[explained\] before. In the specific \[names\], 'faith' (śraddhā) has as its nature deep conviction, joy, and aspiration toward real virtues and capacities, with mental purity; its function is to counteract lack of faith and to delight in the good. Because it contains, gathers, and generates all virtues, it is called a 'treasury' (garbha), which is an appositional compound (karmadhāraya). The following are all similar to this. Second, guarding against wrongdoing is called 'morality' (śīla); it has goodness in the three kinds of action as its nature, and its function is stopping evil and performing good. Third, 'shame' (hrī) has as its nature respecting and esteeming the worthy and good based on the power of oneself and the Dharma; its function is counteracting shamelessness and bringing evil actions to rest. Fourth, 'conscience' (apatrāpya) has as its nature looking down upon and rejecting violence and evil based on the power of the world; its function is counteracting lack of conscience and bringing evil actions to rest. Fifth, taking in teachings extensively has wisdom derived from hearing as its nature, and cleverness and discernment as its function. Sixth, parting with one's own to bestow upon others has volition associated with non-greed as its nature, and destroying stinginess as its function. Seventh, 'wisdom' (prajñā) has discernment regarding the observed object as its nature, and severing doubt as its function. Eighth, 'mindfulness' (smṛti) has causing the mind to remember clearly and not forget a previously experienced object as its nature, and being the basis for concentration (samādhi) as its function. Ninth, 'retention' (dhāraṇa) has mindfulness and wisdom that uphold what is remembered as its nature, and not forgetting over a long duration as its function. Tenth, 'eloquence' (pratibhāna) has skillfully proclaiming what is retained, with wisdom as its nature, and responding to capacities as its function. Among these ten above, the five of faith, shame, conscience, mindfulness, and wisdom each receive their name based on their intrinsic substance; the other five receive their names from their efficacy: that is, morality and giving establish their names through the function of action, while hearing, retention, and eloquence take the function of wisdom as their designation.
