華嚴經探玄記 6.23

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [6.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1733.6.23)

> First, as for explaining the name: the benefiting and moistening essence of the ten pāramitās is called 'merit'; having the efficacy of adorning and inducing \[the fruit\] is like flowers bearing fruit, and the interweaving of manifold practices is like a 'flower cluster.' Furthermore, 'merit' is the essence of the practices, 'flower' is the function of the practices, 'cluster' is the mark of the practices, and 'bodhisattva' is the person; having those virtues, it is an appositional compound (bahuvrīhi). This is an alternative name for Guṇavana (Forest of Merit), similar to the 'Vajradhvaja Pariṇāmanā Chapter' below. 'Ten practices' refers to the factors of the stage, so it is named by including a number. The ten practices of a bodhisattva are also designated by the dependent genitive (tatpuruṣa), with person and Dharma titling the chapter.
