> Seventh, regarding the provisional and the real: if according to the triyāna, when the Buddha resides in this Sahā world, the mixed assembly is real because they are born through real retribution, while the bodhisattvas are provisional because they manifest through expedient means, as the sūtra says: "Those bodhisattvas conceal their immeasurable sovereign powers," and so forth. Or the bodhisattvas are real, because bodhisattvas before the bhūmis are still born in this land, while the mixed assembly is provisional, because according to the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, they are all provisional forms manifested by great bodhisattvas of other directions. If the Buddha resides in a pure land, the bodhisattvas are solely real because they are born through real retribution, while the mixed assembly is illusory and not really existent; as a treatise says, "In an enjoyment land there are truly no such sentient beings; wishing to make the pure land not empty, \[the Buddha\] magically manifests such diverse types of sentient beings." If in the Ekayāna, when the Buddha is here in this Padmagarbha world, the bodhisattvas and the mixed assembly are either all real, because they manifest through the sāgara-mudrā-samādhi and are subsumed within real virtues; or they are all provisional, because they manifest according to conditions. Other implications should be inferred accordingly.
