> First, presence and absence: among the eight assemblies, the first two and the last two have inquiries, while the other assemblies have none. Why is this? Because in the first assembly, the fruit is indicated to initiate the cause, and therefore there is an inquiry; at the beginning of the second assembly, to trace the cause back to the fruit, an inquiry is made. However, because the practices and stages in the causal \[phase\] have gradations, five assemblies are used to answer it; because there is no superiority or inferiority in the fruitional stage, it is answered within its own assembly. Yet as for further questions within various chapters of the five assemblies, these are all inquiries made in response to what is being spoken within the teaching of that assembly, not separate inquiries about the marks of the major stages, because up to the sixth assembly it solely answers what was inquired about at the beginning of the second assembly. In the seventh assembly, because it clarifies the cause and fruit of ripened practice, an inquiry is made; that is, the cultivation of practice is unobstructed and the six stages are accomplished suddenly, so it is answered within its own assembly. In the eighth assembly, because it clarifies the cause and fruit matching the nature, an inquiry is made; that is, all enter the dharmadhātu without distinction, so it is also answered within its own assembly.
