> Eighth, relying on roots of virtue. A river with pearls does not dry up; a mountain with jade gains lustre. If there are no roots of virtue within, how could one speak outwardly? Yet this is discussed solely with respect to the speaker, because it is this person who realizes this Dharma. Briefly, there are two kinds: 1. Wisdom, being foremost. The power of other practices and vows. The buddhas of the ten directions said to Samantabhadra: 'Also through the power of your cultivation of all practices and vows.' The buddhas of the ten directions said to Dharmamati: 'And through the power of the roots of virtue you have cultivated, causing you to enter this samādhi and expound the Dharma.' Whether it is the roots of virtue of those who respond or the practices and vows of the transforming master, both belong to the causes of preaching.
