> Second, the vinaya collection: first the name, afterwards its characteristics. Within the former, it is also named bini, which is merely an abbreviation of the Sanskrit term. This is translated as "taming and subduing" (tiaofu): that is, training the three karmas and curbing/subduing faults and errors. "Training" applies to both abstention and positive action; "subduing" refers exclusively to abstaining from evil. Deriving the name from the practice that is expounded, it is the collection of taming and subduing; alternatively, the collection that expounds possesses the capacity to tame and subdue, which is an exocentric compound (bahuvrīhi). The sūtra collection likewise contains this explanation. Vinaya is also translated as "cessation/destruction" (mie). Cessation has three meanings: first, the destruction of wrong karmic deeds; second, the destruction of afflictions; third, the attainment of the fruit of cessation. It is also called śīla, fully called chidaluo (śīla), which here is translated as "coolness"; because it is free from the cause of feverish anguish, one attains the fruit of coolness. It is also named prātimokṣa, which here is translated as "separate liberation" (bie jietuo). This takes its name from the cause, yet possesses two meanings: first, it is called "separate" to distinguish it from the \[precepts of\] dhyāna and the path; second, the three karmas and the seven branches each prevent wrongdoing separately, and hence it is called "separate." It is also translated as "conforming liberation," which is established according to the fruit, because it conforms to the two kinds of fruits of liberation, conditioned and unconditioned. It is also named "innate goodness" (xingshan); and in the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya it is also named "keeping faith" (shouxin), because one truly can uphold what was received in the past. Afterwards, revealing its characteristics: the earlier names already contain abstention and positive action, which are the characteristics of vinaya. If explained specifically, Vasubandhu's Commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "Vinaya has four meanings: namely, transgression, origin, restoration to purity, and deliverance." This is detailed in that treatise.
