> Second, explaining the name: in Sanskrit it is gocara, translated here as "range of practice" (suoxing). Pari is translated here as "completely" or "universally." Viśuddhi is translated as "pure." This means that the three modes of karma traversing through phenomena and conditions are called "range of practice"; skillful vows preventing errors, leaving behind faults, and accomplishing virtues are called "pure." Furthermore, the simultaneous operation of compassion and wisdom is called "range of practice"; practice surpassing ordinary people and the Hinayana is therefore called "pure," because the outflow-free state of the two vehicles cannot simultaneously benefit others and is not true purity. One who grasps this meaning finds that lifting the foot or lowering the foot is entirely Mañjuśrī's mind, and seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing are all Samantabhadra's practice. Being Mañjuśrī's mind, the mind has no turbidity or confusion, which is called "pure"; being Samantabhadra's practice, it is the past cultivation of the Buddha, practiced together by all buddhas and bodhisattvas. "The range of practice is itself pure" is a karmadhāraya compound.
